6 Steps to Staying Motivated

We both know that staying motivated on your fitness journey can be a challenge, especially when progress is slow or setbacks occur.

However, with the right mindset and a couple of key strategies, we can stay on track and achieve your goals.

Here are 6 actionable tips to help you stay motivated:

  1. Set realistic and specific goals: Having clear and achievable goals is essential to stay motivated on your fitness journey. Make sure your goals are specific and measurable, such as losing a certain amount of weight, running a particular distance or increasing your strength. Avoid setting goals that are too broad or vague, as they can be overwhelming and demotivating. No matter how many Men’s Health covers promise you a 6-pack in 6 weeks, you and I know this is still an unrealistic expectation.

  2. Find your why: Identifying your "why" can be a powerful motivator. Why do you want to get fit? Is it to improve your health, boost your confidence or be more active with your family? Understanding your reasons for pursuing fitness can give you a sense of purpose and help you stay committed to your goals.

  3. Create a plan and track your progress: Having a plan and tracking your progress can help you stay on track and motivated. Create a workout schedule that fits your lifestyle and stick to it. Use a fitness tracker or journal to record your workouts, measurements, and achievements. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem.

  4. Surround yourself with support: Surrounding yourself with supportive people can make a significant difference in your motivation and success. Find a workout buddy, join an online community, or seek out a personal trainer or coach who can guide and encourage you.

  5. Mix it up: Doing the same workout routine repeatedly for months on end can become boring and demotivating. Mix up your workouts every 4-6 weeks by trying new activities, challenging yourself with different exercises, or increasing your intensity. Variety can keep your workouts fresh and exciting.

  6. Reward yourself: Set up rewards for yourself when you reach certain milestones or achieve your goals. It can be anything that motivates you, such as a new workout outfit, a massage or a healthy treat. Rewards can give you something to look forward to and help you stay motivated.

Remember, staying motivated on your fitness journey is a marathon, not a sprint. It's essential to focus on progress rather than perfection and to be kind to yourself when setbacks inevitably occur (I’ll admit, I struggle with that part - but I’m getting better).

Keep moving forward, and with time, dedication, and maybe a little guidance you will achieve your fitness goals.
